Ferruccio proudly identifies himself as a third-generation mountaineer, hailing from a lineage of Mountain Guides, with both his father and grandfather preceding him in the profession. His journey as an aspiring Mountain Guide commenced in 1976, predominantly within the scenic expanse of the Dolomites, spanning from the Brenta Group to the Adamello Presanella Group. Presently, he holds the esteemed position of president within the Madonna di Campiglio Mountain Guide Group, consisting of 30 members. Despite his administrative duties, Ferruccio remains steadfast in his passion for guiding individuals through mountainous terrain. It is with great pleasure that we share Ferruccio's narrative, a testament to the enduring relationship between our brand and the Madonna di Campiglio Guides.

With over 80,000 kilometers under his belt, Ferruccio has truly traversed extensive distances.

Ferruccio Vidi shared with us his lifetime commitment to the mountains, a passion passed down through generations and remaining resilient and vibrant despite the passage of time and changing circumstances. In just over an hour, he eloquently conveyed not only his deep emotions and passion but also the rigorous work, unwavering commitment, and profound dedication demanded by the role of a guide.

"As mountain guides, we provide assistance to all, whether they seek leisurely strolls or more challenging hikes. However, we keenly discern differences among our clientele, particularly noting disparities between nostalgic clients in their 50s and 60s and younger individuals. The values and reverence for the mountains vary, as does the adaptability often overlooked by newer generations.
A refuge, by its very nature, serves as a sanctuary. One should not expect hotel-like amenities, as this contradicts the essence and purpose of a refuge, which is to offer simple shelter. Our goal is to cultivate respect for the mountains, an environment deserving preservation and offering much in return.
In the earlier years of our profession, mountain terrain was undeniably more hostile and less accessible. Today, with the proliferation of social media narratives, selfies, and travel tips, awareness has grown. People increasingly appreciate the beauty and significance of nature. However, amidst this, it's vital to remember that the mountain imposes its own rules, to which all must adhere."

Those who aspire to become guides typically already possess a profound connection to the mountains. They must be seasoned mountaineers and proficient skiers, as these are fundamental prerequisites. However, the training process is rigorous and comprehensive, particularly focusing on crucial aspects like safety.
The significant shift from mountaineer to guide lies in assuming responsibility for others' well-being and safety. "Learning to recognize, respect, and be mindful of one's limitations are among the foremost qualities a guide must embody," emphasizes Ferruccio. "The transition entails understanding when to push forward and when to exercise caution, knowing when to draw the line."

Mountain guides have historically played a pivotal role as pioneers of mountain tourism, leading and educating inexperienced adventurers. This role remains crucial today, extending beyond mere guidance to encompass valuable teachings.
"We perceive ourselves as not just advocates of mountain values, but also as educators," notes Ferruccio. "We impart essential knowledge on how to effectively navigate a mountain excursion, covering everything from appropriate footwear to backpack essentials. Central to our teachings is the fundamental principle of leaving no trace, emphasizing the importance of carrying out one's waste."

Footwear holds paramount importance for a guide like Ferruccio, particularly considering the extensive mileage covered over his 45-year career, equivalent to two circumnavigations of the globe. Ferruccio underscores the significance of reliable footwear, such as the Rigel boots, which he has relied on during numerous trekking expeditions. Praising their lightweight construction, comfort, and durability, he regards them as an optimal choice for multi-day trekking endeavors. Their exceptional fit and adaptability to the foot make them a preferred option for traversing varied terrain.

Ensuring one's feet are adequately protected and dry is paramount for fully savoring the splendors that the mountains offer. Ferruccio emphasizes that while the mountains impose their own set of rules and demands, they also bestow abundant rewards, albeit in diverse forms depending on the challenges encountered.

"Venturing into the mountains has introduced me to a plethora of diverse and profound emotions. Rock climbing ignites a surge of adrenaline, especially when facing daunting challenges as a lead climber. Via ferrata routes demand unwavering attention, as seemingly easy paths often conceal unforeseen obstacles. Scaling the towering peaks of the Himalayas revealed the necessity of sheer determination and boundless patience, navigating treacherous glaciers and formidable walls of snow and ice.
Embarking on multi-day treks, particularly in remote and seldom-visited landscapes, may evoke feelings of apprehension and uncertainty. Yet, the immense satisfaction upon completing such journeys surpasses any initial anxieties. Day excursions, especially under clear skies, offer tranquility and fulfillment. Contrary to common belief that guides constantly seek out the most formidable challenges, we also derive joy from embracing simpler experiences. It's during these moments that we forge deeper connections with those we guide, sharing stories and imparting wisdom.
Amidst the myriad sensations and fluctuations inherent to mountain exploration, our steadfast determination propels us ever forward towards our ultimate goal: the summit. This, ultimately, is the essence of why we are drawn to the mountains. For in the mountains, we find life."

A heartfelt thank you to Ferruccio for graciously sharing his insights and time.
